Let us be thankful for life, love, friends, and family. Let us think about those who are near us and near to us. Let us reach out in thought, phone call, text, or video to those who cannot be with at this moment. Let us remember those who have gone on and are not to return. New Year’s Eve brought celebration. New Year’s Eve always brings celebration accompanied with joy and a modicum of sadness. I must admit that I approach this New Year with a great deal of reservation. I am extremely elated to cross over into 2017. Yet, I remember that we had a presidential election in 2016. I remember that my candidate, Hillary Clinton, did not win. I recall that her opponent was elected although she had close to three million more votes. After the election, the victor caused a great deal of rumblings. His actions seemed as if he was trying to muscle President Obama out of the way. He even tried to take credit for good economic news as if we did not already have a President. Twenty seventeen will mark the year that Barack Obama left office and Donald Trump assumed office. Simply stated, I am not looking forward to the Trump presidency.
I do not know who wrote it. But I came across a very interesting “tweet” on New Year’s Eve. The quote said that time zones are interesting to follow on New Year’s Eve due to the many celebrations. The writer then made posited a very interesting political metaphor. The metaphor seemed to convey that the Blue States were moving into 2017 while the Red States were moving into 1924. In short, Donald Trump has given every signal that his presidency will set civilization back a few decades. He wants to introduce a new nuclear arms race. He wants to increase the number of nuclear weapons in existence not decrease such weapons. His choice for Secretary of State does not have a clue concerning American interests and human rights. There will not be a promise of peace in the Middle East. There will not be an encouragement of democracy on the continent of Africa. The phrase “Make America Great Again” has nothing to do with the promotion of democracy. Women’s rights will suffer. Muslims are living in fear of being rounded up. Many Latinos are living in fear of being deported. The wealthy will definitely get wealthier. The income gap will be like a chasm wider than the Grand Canyon. Race relations will suffer immeasurably.
Republicans are essentially in control of the entire government. They are eager to repeal health care. They are eager to introduce stricter voter laws that suppress voting. They want to give the rich huge tax breaks and cut government services. They would love to rid the country of the last vestiges of the New Deal and the Great Society. They claim that they are not racists. However, they target people of color for the worst laws and the worst policies. Republicans want to place more guns in the streets and promote open carry laws. This seems to be some type of set up because even in open carry states police killed Black people because police say they have a gun. The police even kill unarmed Black people in open carry states. Do not look to the Trump Justice Department to address the issue. To the Trump Justice Department, Civil Rights is an anachronism from a previous and irrelevant time. They say, “Since racism no longer exists, who needs civil rights legislation to burden business and the country?”
I am truly amazed by the numbers of Black people, dressed in clown uniforms, who are being paraded in from of the television cameras. I am truly amazed at an incoming President who trusts the intelligence of an enemy state more that he trusts the intelligence of his own government. This, more than likely, places the nation as a whole in grave risk. It is very awkward, on the eve of a Presidential Inaugural, not to know what an incoming President stands for, but only what that person promotes. We still have not seen Donald Trump’s tax returns. He still has not formed a wall between his business dealings and the American presidency. He is appointing people for Cabinet positions who have basically previously dismissed those positions. Everyone knows that if you cannot abolish a government office, simply place someone in the leadership position that will not do the job. Moreover, the new President’s chief advisor is tied to the White Supremacist community. The proposed Attorney General is a White Supremacist. The new President to be said he wanted ban Muslims from the United States. He labeled Mexicans as rapists and thieves. He has devalued and insulted women on a regular basis. The only political glimmer of hope that I see in the next administration is found in the U.S. Constitution. It says that the President shall serve for one four-year term. Yes, there is the possibility of re-election. However, that one four-year term sounds excellent to me.
