Susan Smith was convicted of murdering her two sons on July 22, 1995, in South Carolina. When this incident first made the national news, Susan Smith claimed that she had been carjacked by a black man who made off with her automobile and two sons in the back seat. A photo rendering of the alleged suspect was even circulated. Investigators stated that they were initially skeptical of her claims which proved to be false. Susan Smith is currently serving out her sentence in a South Carolina correctional facility. On October 23, 1989, Charles Stuart reported to the Boston police that he and his wife had been attacked by a black man who was trying to rob them. According to Stuart, the was wounded in the attack but his wife was killed. Charles Stuart committed suicide as it was coming to light that he had lied about the whole incident. Stuart was the one who had killed his wife. There was no black man involved in the incident at all. Just over a week ago President Donald Trump erupted in a tweet-storm accusing former President Barack Obama of having “wire tapped” Trump’s phone at Trump Tower in New York City. Since that time other Trump supporters have even gone so far as to say that Obama has tapped Trump’s phone in the White House. No proof of these allegations has come forward. No evidence has been placed on display. Apparently, no black man has been involved period.
Donald Trump and the Republican Party’s racial animosity toward former President Barack Obama is deeper and more disturbing than I had initially understood. We recall McConnell saying that his reason for living would be to make Obama a one term President. Late on, as Senate Majority Leader, McConnell denied Obama an appointee to the Supreme Court by simply refusing to meet with his nominee or hold hearings. We recall hearing Rush Limbaugh stating that he hoped Obama would fail as President. We know that Republicans virtually refused work with President Obama on anything for an entire eight year period. They even shut down the government twice and mounted ceaseless investigations. We also know that the current President made his political career by becoming the principal spokesperson for the “birther movement” claiming that Barack Obama could not or should not be President because is it likely that he was not born in the United States. I was under the impression that once Obama was out of office Trump and the Republican establishment would leave Obama alone.
The fervor with which Trump and Republicans are approaching repeal and replace legislation for the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is sickening (pun intended). All I hear is that Obamacare has failed and needs to be replaced. Once again, no evidence is presented. Such fallacious arguments simply beg the question. Please explain to me why enrollment is up in Obamacare. Please explain to me why Republican town hall meetings are inundated with constituents concerned that Republicans are trying to take away their health care. This does not sound like a failing health care system. This sounds like a President and party ideologically determined to remove all vestiges of America’s first Black President. Trump tried to blame the Muslim travel ban on Obama. Trump attempted to blame the disastrous Yemen raid on Obama. Trump is currently engaged in gutting the CIA, the Department of Justice, and the Department of State. The primary target is so-called “Obama bureaucrats.” The essence of attempting to “purge” the government of Obama bureaucrats is a foolhardy mission. In order to reverse Obama, Trump will have to take away health care, end voter protections, end protections for women, end protections for the environment, end protections for consumers, refresh the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, go to war with Iran, and go to war with Syria. Ironically, this appears to be what President Trump is trying to accomplish. Moreover, to eradicate all vestiges of Obama, Trump will also have to end sanctions against Russia. President Trump is surrounded by advisors who traffic in conspiracy theory. President Trump is surrounded by advisors who had nothing but the utmost contempt for America’s first Black President. On this point, he has found common ground with many Republicans in Congress. As of this moment, Trump and the Republicans do have any policy prescriptions to address American concerns. There only policy platform that Trump and the Republicans have is if Obama supported it, we are against it.
