Cartoonists are allowed a certain liberty when they draw, and they often exaggerate features.
President Barack Obama usually is given big ears and big teeth; Donald Trump’s hair is given a life of its own; and Hillary Clinton is depicted a bit pudgy around the midsection with her famous pantsuits.
When it comes to Michelle Obama, who I believe is a strikingly gorgeous woman, she is often depicted as an angry black woman who is usually forcing people to eat right or else.
But when it comes to the latest cartoon of the first lady by cartoonist Ben Garrison, it appears he went too far. Some are calling the picture of Michelle Obama downright racist.
The cartoon titled “Make The First Lady Great Again!” shows a mean-faced, muscle bounded Michelle Obama on the left, compared with a smiling, glamorous-looking Melania Trump on the right.
Mrs. Obama is wearing a green dress with a thick bulge in between her legs. Yes, this is tacky and disrespectful. It presents Obama as a transgender woman.
After Garrison tweeted the picture on Friday, Twitter reacted quickly with dozens of people defending Obama.
One tweet from GrrrGraphics reads: “It’s OK if you can’t draw well enough to capture Michelle’s beauty Any1 can draw a basic white woman.”
This cartoon crossed the line. What do you think?
