“My purpose is to make God-honoring music that edifies the body of Christ.” Sean C. Johnson
In the history of Brothaonline.com, we’ve never named the same individual artist of the year two years in a row. It was an easy hard choice to name Sean C. Johnson our “Artist of the Year for 2016”.
Sean has continued to build on the foundation of what has become his musical legacy. After releasing the acclaimed Circa 1993 in 2015 which Rapzilla.com stated:
“Circa 1993 is deceptively challenging because Sean makes feel good music, but the content is heavier. You’ll find yourself dancing and getting pricked at the same time. A lot of [Christian hip hop] lacks balance. Either it’s all substance with not so great music or good music lacking any sort of tangible content. Sean’s album marries both very well.”
With reviews like this, I like many others thought Sean would ride Circa 1993 well into 2016 and release at least two more singles. But if you know Sean he always has a surprise for you. Starting this past January and every other month after he released a brand new single free to the public in a series called “RACE THE SUN” with the theme being “Home” and tell a story about redemption. Along with each single came a video or a visual storyboard that sync so well you’d think the video was completed first. All this while to performing, mentoring youth, and creating even more music for 2017.
We fully understand why at this year’s Gospel Blue MIC Awards he not only the Star Radio Award but also the Artist of the Year.
We hope that in the coming months that Sean will continue to challenge us not only as listeners but believers as well.
Recap of the “RACE THE SUN” Series.
Each single has delving deeper into the life a Christians’ walk the ups, downs, fumbles, and victories.
The first single “Home” lets the listener know that no matter how low we get or how far we roam we can always come.
Next was “SONIC BOOM” that challenges the listener to answer one simple question, How Fast Will You Flee Temptation?
Followed by “ANGELS” that reassures that nothing can separate us from the love of God.
In the middle, there is “UNO” that reminds us that there is only one true GOD who is often imitated but never duplicated.
Then “UP”, tells the listener that trouble doesn’t last forever and no matter how low you feel you always have hope in Christ.
And finally, the sixth single “LUKE CAGE lets us know that our salvation is secure. No matter what comes our way, our souls are bulletproof.
