“From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2 NAS).
The psalmist was expressing his disappointment and exhaustion because of his absence from his homeland, and he needed God’s protection. “Let me dwell in Your tent forever; Let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings” (Psalm 61:4 NAS). His heart was fainting and he was buckling under the pressure. “When I’m far from anywhere, down to my last gasp, I call out…” (Psalm 63:2 MSG). Life was overwhelming him and it felt like a shroud or covering of doubt and life stress. “Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God…” (Psalm 43:5 MSG).
Ironically, when the pressures of life was wearing him down he found hope, strength and refuge in God. He was led to a rock higher than him. “From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety” (Psalm 61:2 NLT). Many biblical scholars believe the “rock” is God. “GOD is bedrock under my feet, the castle in which I live, my rescuing knight. My God–the high crag where I run for dear life, hiding behind the boulders, safe in the granite hideout” (Psalm 18:2 MSG).
Likewise, when your strength is almost gone; don’t buckle or cave in. Pause and ask to lead you to a place of refreshing in God. This place could be a sanctuary or with people who can empower you…”so that I may come to you in joy by the will of God and find refreshing rest in your company” (Romans 15:32 NAS). We are all aware that this journey can be weary, but God gives us the power to endure.. “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure” (1 Corinthians 10:13 NAS).
Prayer: Lord, when my life is overwhelmed with the worries and cares of the world, lead me to a place where you are; a place that is worry free, carefree, and stress free. I know that everything is in your hands because you are a sovereign God, but there are times when life’s pressures are so heavy and hard that I begin to weaken and cave. But thank you Father for being my strength during my weak times. I will neither fall nor buckle because you are my firm foundation,my salvation, my solid rock (see Psalm 18:2). Amen..
