The Lord works in mysterious ways; I can unequivocally attest to this firsthand…
About a week ago, my good friend, Salpie (awesome makeup artist/teacher) posted an open casting call for a film based on a comic book called, Rottentail. I appreciate it when my friends look out for me; I try to do the same for them. I read the description on the casting call and thought that the project sounded really cool. But I don’t do open calls anymore, lol.
Side Note: Yes, I do have an ego…not too big, but I’ve been in the business for a long time. I do feel that I bring value to projects that I’m a part of at this point in my career.
Now, back to the story…
I decided that I would reach out to the director, introduce myself to him and see if I could get a script. I wanted to take a look at the story, the writing style and see if I would be interested in the project. My friend posted this message at midnight, so I thought I would check into it the next afternoon.
Around 8:30 am the VERY NEXT MORNING, I get a call from my beautiful and wonderful friend, Ricki Maslar (casting director extraordinaire). She’s currently in Oklahoma with another good friend of mine Harvey, shooting a Christmas film. But, before she went to set, she felt that she needed to speak with me.
This is what she said:
“Hey, Tank! Say, I’ve got a director that I cast a lot of movies for and he’s shooting a film in Arizona. I told him about you and told him he should have you in his movie. He wants to offer you the role of the General if you want it…”
Wow! I was floored, humbled and couldn’t help but smile. I felt valued and appreciated beyond measure. How cool was that? I find out about a project and just a few hours later, I’m getting a call about that project and the director, the writer and the producer ALL have been waiting to work with ME…Praise God!
Now here’s a point of FACT for me: If Ricki asks me to do a project, I DO THE PROJECT. I love Ricki and she’s always trying to put me in the best light. Knowing this, I didn’t even have to see the script because I know she’s always looking out for me.
BUUTTT…I’m not very old and have a baby face, lol. So, I had a bit of angst in accepting the role of an army General. I looked through lots of military style cuts and pictures of Generals. I decided to cut off my hair, let it gray and do the military “high and tight” cut. I told me cousin Mark about the role. He’s been in the military for 20 years and I knew he would have good insight. I’ve been reading up on military history, Generals, Powell…I’m doing my research, people!
Even though this film is a horror/comedy, I want my character to be 3 dimensional. That work also includes hitting the gym to gain back some of the muscle I lost during my 21 day fast (see last Brotha Online post). Every time I do a project, I document the behind the scenes stuff. This time, I’m including the workouts that I’m doing with my trainer, Alex Nunez of ANT Training in Tempe, AZ. I need to get in the best shape I can in a 2 week period of time (shooting is coming quick)!
Bodybuilding.com has agreed to carry my fitness blog on this, so you’ll see this there as well. I’ll be making comments on my diet also. You guys will have an “All Access Pass.” I hope you’ll follow me on this journey. Take a look at the video and feel free to leave comments. I hope this makes you laugh, makes you think about your own health and nutrition, gets you motivated and entertains you.
Now let’s REALLY see how much change we can make in a 2 week period!
PS: My diet is consisting of a lot of chicken, rice, yams, veggies, eggs, tuna, oats and the proper supplements. I can’t have a cheat meal, a brownie, a gyro (I LOVE GYROS!)…if it ain’t on the list of foods, it ain’t going in my belly for the month of February. It’s going to be a long February… 😉
Meal 1: Eggs, Oats, Almond Butter
Meal 2: Protein powder, Ezekiel bread, Almond Butter
Meal 3: White Meat Chicken, Brown Rice, Veggies
Meal 4: Same as Meal 3
Meal 5: Same as Meal 3, add Avocado
Meal 6: (optional) Tuna, eggs, Almond Butter (heck why not more almond butter, right?)
