LL Cool J has had longevity in the rap game. From “I’m Bad” to “Momma Said Knock You Out” to “Luv You Better”, he has had hits that span over the decades. And although some don’t consider him the best ever, he actually considered himself that at one time. Later in 2008, he actually dropped a song on his Exit 13 album called “Rocking With The G.O.A.T.” where he went into his thoughts on being one of the best. Here is one of his opening lines to that song: “That was cool. Let’s get back to the block (expletive). Making it impossible for haters who want to pop (expletive). I got this.” At that point, LL Cool J is defending his title and coming at those who are hating on it. One player in the NFL that has been coming for his haters a lot these days is Tom Brady. Those that love him see his greatness and those that don’t like him see the things that have happened with the Patriots over his time there. Plenty have called him the G.O.A.T. already. But there are some that refused to do so, giving that title to Peyton Manning or Joe Montana or any other quarterback they can think of. Well, after this past Super Bowl performance, there are many that really have to evaluate that question yet again.
The Patriots were down big against the Atlanta Falcons 28-3 in the Super Bowl and at that point, many thought the Falcons were going to cruise to a win. But someone forgot to tell Tom Brady and the Patriots. New England’s defense stepped up and stifled the Atlanta offense (with a little help from the play-calling of the Falcons offense) and Tom Brady and the New England offense began to wake up. And after a big fourth-and-three conversion in the third quarter, the Patriots offense got rolling and scored 31 unanswered points in an unprecedented comeback that silenced the Falcons and their fans. The Falcons would win the game 34-28 in overtime and that gave Tom Brady his fifth Super Bowl ring, more than any other quarterback in the NFL. Although some might not like him, you have to realize greatness when you see it. Brady essentially put the team on his back offensively. The running game, which had done well all season long, was stalling all game and just could not make their mark on the game. But the adjustment they made was taking out the workhorse running back in Blount and putting in James White primarily to receive the football out of the backfield. Although White scored two rushing touchdowns, he was the Patriots leading wide receiver in Sunday’s game. Brady found ways and made people better than they had been and that is something that he has been doing his entire career.
Many wonder what makes Tom Brady great. After all, he was not highly sought after at the NFL level after he was cool, calm and collected at the University of Michigan. Even when he got the NFL, there were no scouts that looked at him and believed their was even any greatness within him. But his will to compete and his will to be the best is what carried him the heights he is at now. Along with his ability to compete, his innate ability to make players around him better has been seen over and over again. Looking at all the players he has played with, he has helped make them who they are. The best wide receiver he has played with over his career has been Randy Moss. Other than that, the only person that you can name that he threw the football to that has a shot at the Hall of Fame is Rob Gronkowski. To take players and consistently raise their group of play and make them look better than they are is a skill that not many quarterbacks have or can achieve for as long as Brady has done so.
