Elder Simon Edward Richardson, III is the pastor of Gospel of Grace Church of God in Christ in Newport News, Virginia. A native of Hampton, Virginia, Pastor Richardson has served diligently in ministry since his childhood. His ministry is based on the scripture “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God:” (Ephesians 2:8) Pastor Richardson is committed to winning souls for Christ and believes no one is excluded from God’s grace and His mercy. The scripture that guides his life and orders his steps is “In everything give thanks. For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (1Thessalonians 5:18)
Elder Richardson was ordained an elder in the Church of God in Christ August 6, 2012 and appointed pastor of Gospel of Grace Church of God in Christ July of 2015. He has shared the word of God for many services throughout Virginia in the second jurisdiction.
He is a gifted musician and singer, who has faithfully served as minister of music, in not only Gospel of Grace, but several ministries in the kingdom. He has traveled all over the United States, throughout Europe, Korea, and South Africa ministering the “gospel of grace” through music. His anointing and experience gifted him with an ability to help young Christians and connect with those seasoned in Christ. His desire is to build the foundation that his father, the late Dr. Simon E. Richardson, Jr., laid as pastor and inspire and motivate others to not settle for mediocrity, but to live the abundant life that God promised according to John 10:10.
Elder Richardson is a 2004 graduate of Bethel High School in Hampton, Virginia. He also attended Thomas Nelson Community College and John Leland Center for Theological Studies.
Most importantly, he, like his father, wants the world to know that he is simply and humbly is a “sinner saved by grace”
Charles Clark: Thanks Man for doing this interview !
Simon Richardson: Thank you for considering me to be a part of Brotha Mag!
CC: I’m going to jump right in, Who is Simon Edward Richardson?
SR: Simon Edward Richardson is a Man that loves God and loving God puts everything else in place!
CC: My first introduction to was as a singer/songwriter/producer. How would you describe your sound?
SR: My sound is unique because I can adapt to anything. But I would say the sound of gospel because, it’s my first sound
CC: Who are your musical influences?
SR: My musical influences are Puff Daddy (PDiddy), TI, Brandy, Kim Burrell, Leshawn Daniels, Eric Dawkins, Calvin Austin
CC: What is your writing process like?
SR: My writing process is very easy i would say. I write off mood, depends on how the track makes me feel and I go with it. Everything brings an emotional tie to it!
CC: As of July 2015, you added Pastor to your many titles. How is different for you preaching God’s word verses singing?
SR: When you sing you are bringing a message so for me it was no difference I just talk the bible instead of singing the bible .. lol
CC: You became Pastor after the death of your father. What has this part of your journey been like continuing the legacy of your dad?
SR: Becoming a pastor while your father is alive is totally different from becoming a pastor because he died. So honestly the journey has been rough! But because of grace, I’m making it! I love the people that are with me, they have really inspired me, motivated me! I tell people all the time i thought my job was to grow the church when all along the church is growing me!
CC: Some people always want sons to be like their fathers. How have you made the role your own?
SR: Yes people do want sons to be like fathers, and although the son is like the father in ways such as DNA, slight habits, he is still the son who is not daddy. For me it’s been easy because I don’t try to be my dad, I must be me!
CC: Will you continue to produce, write, and sing?
SR: I absolutely love music, so i can’t see myself ever quitting on music. Just patiently awaiting the time where I’ll be able to do it again like i use to.
CC: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
SR: I’ve learned that you can have goals and set them and God will still interrupt your plans or fulfill them according to His will. Everything has to align with His will! so I see myself where God sees me in 5 years. Pastoring a prominent church that is meeting the needs of people! Empowering people to live in grace!
CC: What is the one lesson you can remember and say this is what my dad taught me?
SR: I use to hold things that people did to me and carry the hurt! I’ve been bruised a lot by folk. but my father would often remind me that in life you’re going to get hurt by folk but don’t play God and hold things and judge people. He would say this one statement and it helped with my deliverance from having faith in people to having faith in GOD. He said this…” It’s not about who is right or who is wrong, It’s about who is righteous!” I made up in my mind i just want to be righteous.
