“I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.”Proverbs 8:12
When you read the title of this article, you may have thought I was referring to Earl who works at the body shop or the mechanic who works at the dealership. That’s not what I mean by the black man and his garage. And before you start pointing to where your car is parked, that’s not what I mean either. I understand that a garage is often used to store vehicles, tools, equipment, etc. However, it is also a place that is responsible for a lot of our greatest inventions. If you listen to the interviews of a lot of rock bands and musical artists, you’ll hear that they originated in a garage. Bill Hewlett and David Packard, the owners of Hewlett Packard, designed the oscillator in the garage. Have you ever heard of YouTube? It started in the garage. What about Google? It took part in the garage. The late Steve Jobs, along with Steve Wozniak, created the first Apple computer in the garage. So in essence, the garage can be a place of innovation.
But this place of innovation doesn’t necessarily have to be in the same place you park your car. In other words, any place can be your garage. Pick a place where you are:
Free to think.
Free to create.
Free to dream.
Free to imagine.
Once you’ve found the place that allows you to create and innovate, label it your garage. It may be in:
Your home office.
Your balcony or porch.
The local coffee shop.
The location isn’t as important as what goes on in your mind when you’re at that location. There must be creativity and innovation. This is your time to think, clear your mind, reflect, imagine, create, plan, dream… And make sure that everyone is on board, so you won’t be bothered when you’re in your garage. The garage is a place where:
Distractions aren’t invited.
Interruptions aren’t invited.
Limitations aren’t invited.
Confusion’s not invited.
Lack is not invited.
When you’re in your garage, don’t be afraid to dream BIG. Don’t worry, your big dreams won’t scare God. Your huge goals won’t make Him nervous. Look at this promise in the Bible.
“Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]”
Ephesians 3:20 AMP
If you’re going to be a successful Christian black man, you need to know how to think BIG. And I don’t believe you’re thinking big enough. That’s why it’s important as a Believer to have a place that you call your “garage”. If you don’t have a garage, you need to build one. Designate an area just for you to create greatness. Where is your garage?
