“This is no way to be treated.”
Those words spoken by Robert Smith to Joseph Hoover in the film Union Bound are so ironic considering the setting they were spoken in—and the time in history in which the individuals lived.
Directed by Harvey Lowry, this film tells the true story of Sgt. Joseph Hoover, an individual who knows what it’s like to fight for what you believe and then find yourself in a situation where the world is turned upside down. This point in history is a pivotal one for many. It’s one thing to say you understand what certain individuals are going through, but when you are actually having to go through it yourself your eyes are truly opened.
That is what Joseph Hoover realized, and through the journey of the film we are able to see how individuals who wanted to do what was right made sacrifices that could have cost them not just their freedom but their lives. “We all got a purpose,” Tom says to Hoover in the film. The important thing is to realize that purpose and do what is necessary to fulfill it.
Union Bound is a film not just about external war but the battle we all have to go through to be the best of ourselves. Not all of us will win the battle, but each day because of individuals like Joseph Hoover and those that we recognize in our own lives, we are able to keep trying.
