Allow me to go out on a limb. Allow me to make a prediction. As Maulana Karenga often says, “Correct me if I’m wrong.” DACA refers to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Although President Obama had been referred to as the “Deporter in Chief,” DACA was an attempt to begin a process on immigration reform by turning ICE enforcement from low-level immigration concerns. The Obama directive gave rise to a constituency known as “The Dreamers.” The Dreamers are these you people who have come of age and are now productive members of American society. On Tuesday, Trump is scheduled to announce whether the current administration will allow DACA to continue or bring an end to the program. Allow me to make my prediction based on a syllogism. Due to Donald Trump’s disdain for having had a Black man as President, the central policy directive of the Trump presidency is to oppose and bring to an end all Obama era policies. Trump has even referred to Obama as one of the worst Presidents ever. DACA is an Obama era policy. Therefore, Trump will announce the demise of the program whenever he makes his announcement. As stated, this will follow the same trends as the Paris Climate Accord and the incessant attempts to overturn the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare). Moreover Trump also rescinded Obama’s halt to the militarization of America’s police departments. This regulation was put in place by the Obama Administration in response to the Ferguson Police Department’s actions toward people demonstrating the police killing of Michael Brown.
Donald Trump’s apparent disdain and obsession with having had a Black President is nothing less than a symptom of White Supremacy. In the Black-White Dialectic context of American political and social reality, the White Supremacist belief is that even the worst aspects of Whiteness is far superior to that which is considered the best of Blackness. This belief is what has allowed Trump and his followers to say, with a straight face, that the incompetent and ignorant current occupier of the White House is a great President while still claiming that an intelligent and effective Obama was the worst President.
Very few White Supremacists actually admit to believing in and practicing White Supremacy. They even bristle at being called out on their white supremacy or racist behavior. For example, about forty percent of Trump supporters believe that Whites suffer more discrimination than anyone else in the country. As a consequence of this perception, the Trump Justice Department, under Jeff Sessions, is preparing an all out legal assault on affirmative action programs as applied to college admissions.
The current President will never admit to being a White supremacist. Yet, his words of support for neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan offer indisputable evidence. Moreover, to have an entire ideology based on ending Obama era policies simply because he was a Black President is the very definition of White Supremacy. Also, the coming decision to destroy DACA is linked genetically with Trump’s speech declaring his presidential candidacy. In that announcement he denounced Mexicans as rapists and criminals. It must be understood that immigration does not only apply to Mexico and Mexicans. However, in the simplistic White Supremacist mind, such rhetoric supplies a comfortable connotation through which to advance one’s own prejudice under the cloche of executive policy making. White Supremacy also promotes an “us versus them” worldview that hinges on a perpetual zero-sum game. The rescinding of the ban on the militarization of local police departments falls right into this mode of thought. In the racist mind, the police are seen as the last line of defense between good white people and the hordes of brown thugs and miscreants camped out at the gate. Therefore, white supremacists argue that you need such protection. This also feeds into “stand your ground laws” and “open carry laws.”
Donald Trump’s pardon of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his encouragement of police to rough up suspects fall right in line with his White Supremacist mindset. He was in his element during Charlottesville press conference. Be wary of his immigration policy proposal which stresses a “merit” based immigration system. Recall the beginning of this article which offered a brief description of White Supremacy. White Supremacist love to talk about merit based. Merit carries the assumption that all White achievement is merit based and should serve as a model for all others. It is with these thoughts in mind that I believe Trump will end DACA. Correct me if I am wrong.
Editor’s Note: On September 5, 2017, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that DACA has been rescinded.
